Toyota to release Plug-in Version of 3rd Generation Prius and All-Electric Vehicle in the next 2 years

Toyota has finally taken the next step in its electric and hybrid vehicle production.

The world’s largest automaker by volume has finally set release dates for the Plug-in version of the 3rd generation Prius as well as announcing plans for the launch of an all-electric vehicle.

Toyota has been quite hesitant and resistant to developing an entirely electric car and even seems tentative about the plug-in Prius. The new Prius will be available in 2011 but in an extremely limited quantity.

Toyota executives have stated that they will only be producing about 10,000 plug-in Prius’ at first to test demand and then decide production needs from actual demand. However, the vehicle will only have an electric range of 14.5 miles. Toyota states this is due to efforts necessary to keep the car “affordable”. Also, some speculate these tentative measures are due to Toyota’s current investments into hybrid vehicle technology.

Toyota will also be releasing an all-electric vehicle in 2012, but they have released no other details except that it is for urban commuting and use only.
